Buying Antique Rugs

Deciding which rugs to buy can be overwhelming.  There are so many options to choose from.  The most important thing is to buy what you like.  A rug can completely change the look of a room, and is equally important as any of your other interior furnishings.

When evaluating a rug, a buyer should first determine if it is handwoven or machine made.  Look at the back.  The pattern will look the same as the front for a hand woven rug.  Machine made rugs generally tend to have a much lower value, and are not collectible.  Next consider the age of the rug.  For a rug to be considered antique it needs to be 80-100 years old.  Vintage rugs should be at least 50 years old.  More age usually gives more value to rugs.  In addition, sizing should be looked at closely.  For example a rug that is advertised as 4 x 6 may actually be 4’2” x 5’7”.

Another important factor in choosing a rug is the place of origin.  The terminology used for this can create some confusion. Rugs are identified by the region or village where the rug was woven with terms like Tabriz, Heriz, Kerman, and Sarouk.  In general, the term “Oriental rug” includes the areas of Persia (Iran), Turkey, India, and more.  Each of these rug making regions will have a distinctive style that is unique.  Rugs from these regions have a lot of design flexibility and will pair well with a traditional interior style or your more modern home.

Handwoven rugs can be quite costly, but it is important to know that they are an investment as well that will hold value over time.  High quality rugs can last for centuries.  This makes maintenance important, but is not as difficult as one might imagine.  Simple vacuuming and stain removal as needed are all that is required.  Wear over time on these rugs adds to the character and history.  So don’t be afraid to use and walk on your antique rugs.  And of course enjoy the search for that perfect rug for your home.
